Hernias are often painful and occur when an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a hole or a weak spot in a surrounding muscle. They are caused by a combination of pressure and an opening or weakness of the muscle, which can be caused in birth or later in life. They can occur in different parts of the body but occur most often in the abdomen and groin. Causes of hernias include poor muscle tone, poor nutrition resulting in obesity, lifting heavy objects, constipation, persistent coughing and pregnancy. Visit the nearest health unit for diagnosis and treatment if you have any signs of hernia.
