Heart failure is caused by diseases or conditions that damage the heart muscle, such as coronary artery disease or other diseases that affect the heart and its valves. Infections can also affect the heart directly. People who have had a heart attack can develop heart failure. Conditions that overwork the heart include chronic high blood pressure, thyroid disease, kidney disease, diabetes, or heart defects present at birth, obesity or smoking.
