Sleeping sickness is an infection caused by 2 parasites that are transmitted to humans by tsetse fly bites. Tsetse flies get the infection from humans or animals with the parasites. Sleeping sickness can also be passed from a pregnant mother to her unborn child through the placenta, or by blood transfusion.
