Whooping cough can kill and early treatment is more effective. Treatment is by antibiotics - the type and dose depends on the age of the child and the seriousness of the condition. A child showing signs of whooping cough (pertussis) must be taken to the nearest health facility immediately for treatment. Signs at first are similar to a cold-runny nose, watery eyes sneezing and mild cough, then there are bursts of quick coughing followed by a 'whoop' sound as the child takes in air.
