Prenatal abnormalities are medical conditions that affect the baby before birth. One common example is Down syndrome. Conditions like this can result from a viral and a bacterial infection of the mother or from genetic factors. A genetic test or a prenatal screening can be done to determine whether a foetus has or is at increased risk of having a disease or genetic abnormality. Pregnant women should attend regular antenatal care visits to access these tests and also ensure a healthy and safe pregnancy.
