No one knows exactly what causes cancer of the oesophagus. There are many different causes. It's more than twice as common among men than women. It usually develops between the ages of 60 and 80. However, it can occur at any age. Certain factors make oesophageal cancer more likely to develop. These vary depending on the type of cancer.
