The complications of schistosomiasis are many and most often occur where many parasites and eggs are present and have moved to other organs. The most common are: bladder cancer, chronic kidney failure or damaged and enlarged spleen, large intestine inflammation with bloody diarrhoea, kidney and bladder obstruction and pulmonary hypertension. Repeated infections can occur, because bacteria can enter the bloodstream through an irritated intestine, heart failure and convulsions (seizures). HIV can also complicate it.
