A safe, effective vaccination is available for mumps. This is combined with the measles and rubella vaccination and is called MMR. The first dose is given at 12-15 months and a second booster dose between 3-5 years. It provides lifelong protection. Recently there have been some anti-vaccine protests against mumps, claiming that the vaccine strain is harmful and that the wild disease is beneficial. There is very little evidence to support this claim or that the MMR vaccine is harmful. Claims made that the MMR vaccine is linked to some other diseases such as inflammatory disease of intestines has not been proven.
