Your doctor may recommend cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) where you have sessions with a therapist either individually (in person or over the phone) or in a group. The therapist will usually suggest a type of therapy called exposure and response prevention therapy. This involves gradually learning to confront the situation you fear (exposure) without using your usual compulsive behaviour to cope with the anxiety (response prevention).
