Gas gangrene usually occurs at the site of injury or a recent surgical wound. It starts suddenly and dramatically. A small number of cases occur without any event. In this case, patients often have underlying blood vessel disease (atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries), diabetes, or colon cancer.
