When both parents are carriers, with each pregnancy there is a 1 in 4 chance of having a child with CF; 2 in 4 chance of having a child who is a carrier and a 1 in 4 chance of having an unaffected child. There are more than 1, 000 genetic mutations associated with different degrees of severity of the disease.
