The symptoms of beta thalassaemia vary depending on which type you have. If you have beta thalassaemia trait, you will be healthy with no symptoms, but you may have mild anaemia. Beta thalassaemia major is a serious condition where your body can't make enough healthy haemoglobin or red blood cells. Symptoms start between 3-6mths and include paleness, shortness of breath and jaundice. Your bones may not grow properly, possibly leading to facial changes; an enlarged spleen; leg ulcers or delayed puberty. You'll need life-long treatment with blood transfusions. The symptoms of Beta thalassaemia intermedia vary. They are similar to those of beta thalassaemia major but less severe. Some people may have mild anaemia and grow normally while others may need regular blood transfusions to help them grow.
