Parathyroid hormone helps to control the levels of calcium in your blood. Sometimes there is no enough parathyroid gland left behind after the operation to control your calcium levels. So, after a parathyroidectomy you may need to take calcium replacement medicine particularly if all of your parathyroid glands were removed. You may need to take vitamin D supplements as well. If you feel tingling or spasms in your fingers or toes contact the hospital or your doctor as this can be a sign that there isn't enough calcium in your blood.
