Sleeping sickness develops in two stages. First, the trypanosomes multiply in tissues, blood and lymph, which causes fever, headaches, joint pains and itching. In the second stage the parasites move into the brain to infect the central nervous system. This is when you see the more obvious symptoms of the disease e. g. changes of behaviour, confusion, disturbances of memory and sleep cycle, poor coordination.
