Pernicious anaemia is the most common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency. Other, less common, causes of vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia include not getting enough vitamin B12 in your diet-strict vegans may be at risk because their diet excludes meat and animal products-the foods that provide this vitamin. Inflammatory bowel diseases, e. g Crohn's disease, can interfere with vitamin B12 absorption if they affect your small bowel. Surgery to remove part or all of your stomach can cause vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia. Liver disorders can reduce your body's ability to use vitamin B12. Having parasites or too much bacteria in your bowel can interfere with the absorption of vitamin B12.
