After swimming in infected water, at first you get a mild itching and a rash-like irritation of the feet and other parts. There may be no other symptoms, with mild anaemia and malnutrition being common in endemic areas. Acute schistosomiasis (Katayama's fever) may occur weeks after the infection. Symptoms are various and depend on type of schistosoma but include: abdominal pain, cough, diarrhea, fever, tiredness, the enlargement of both the liver and the spleen, and genital sores-early treatment, especially of children, is relatively inexpensive and prevents formation of the sores.
