Anus is the name given to the area at the very end of the intestines (bowel). Anal canal is the tube that connects the lower part of your large bowel (rectum) to the outside of your body. It is surrounded by a muscle called the anal sphincter which relaxes and contracts to control the process of defecation (bowel movements).
