Anyone can develop hypothyroidism; but you are at higher risk if you:are a woman over 50; have an autoimmune disease; have a close relative, eg a parent or grandparent, with an autoimmune disease; have been treated with radioactive iodine or anti-thyroid medications; received radiation to the neck or upper chest; had thyroid surgery or have rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.
