There is no cure for smallpox. But a vaccine can prevent or lessen its severity, if given within 4days of infection. But vaccination doesn't help once symptoms develop. Treatment includes drinking plenty of fluids and taking medicines to control pain and fever. To prevent the spread of the virus, an infected person must be isolated from other people until they are no longer contagious. New treatments are under investigation. There have been no known cases of smallpox since 1977.
