To diagnose a rectocele, your doctor will take your medical history, do a physical exam which will include a pelvic exam asking you to bend down as if having bowel movement to see if this reveals the rectocele bulge. S/he may order an ultrasound, defactography(x-rays taken with barium in the rectum) or an MR to confirm the diagnosis.
