The risk factors for pruritus may involve the skin or internal organs. Skin factors include:dry skin, hives, eczema, chicken pox, lice, scabies and sometimes malignant moles(dark patches that are signs of skin cancer). The internal conditions include:kidney failure, liver disease, thyroid disease, some neurological disorders and HIV. Blood disorders, eg iron deficiency anaemia, lypmhoma, polycythemia vera and multiple myeloma, also cause pruritus.
