Before smallpox was eradicated, there were 2 types of the disease worldwide:Variola minor and variola major. Variola minor is a milder form of smallpox and causes less serious illness. It's fatal in very few people. Variola major is the most deadly form of smallpox and kills two-thirds of the people it infects.
