Acanthosis nigricans can occur in healthy people but it is commonly caused by other medical conditions. Acanthosis nigricans is associated with obesity related diabetes, cancers of the gastrointestinal system and hormonal disorders. Use of certain medications, eg oral contraceptives, can also cause the skin disorder.
