The diagnosis of atrial septal defects involves a physical exam. The exam focuses on the heart, your doctor will try and detect abnormal heart sounds called murmurs. A murmur might be heard only in certain body positions and sometimes murmurs may not be heard at all. The physical exam might also show signs of heart failure in some people.
