Ventricular septal defects are congenital abnormalities in which the lower chambers of the heart(ventricles) have an opening. Before birth, a wall forms to separate the right and left ventricle. If the wall doesn't close completely, this is a ventricular septal defect, which allows blood to flow from the left side of the heart to the right side.
