'Breaking waters' is when the fluid that bathes the baby (amnion, amniotic fluid) leaks through the amniotic membrane (the sac that houses the baby in the mothers womb). It can be normal as in when a mother is term/due; or it can be abnormal if the pregnancy is not due, a condition called premature rupture of membranes (PROM). PROM is caused by several factors including infections and trauma. If your water breaks please visit the nearest health facility for appropriate care to be given.
