Helicobacter pylori is a bacteria that can infect the stomach or duodenum (first part of the small intestine). If left untreated it may cause gastritis (inflammation or irritation of the stomach lining) or ulcers. The bacteria has an enzyme that produces carbon dioxide which is what is measured in the breath of an individual after swallowing a liquid that is specifically designed for this test.
