Tests for pericardial effusion are both laboratory tests and imaging studies. Blood tests aim to identify the cause of effusion. Imaging tests include X-rays, imaging by echo, tests of electrical activity. Tests are also done on the fluid tapped from the effusion and tissue samples from the membranes lining the heart.
