The heart can get permanently damaged with scars in these (mitral) valves that allow blood to flow in 1 direction. These damaged valves need to be replaced with artificial ones for the heart to continue functioning normally. The ones that are not opening properly may also be expanded with a tiny balloon inserted into the heart via a blood vessel.
