The risk factors of cerebral palsy include: infections e. g. german measles, chicken pox, CMV, toxoplasmosis, syphilis, exposure to toxins and thyroid problems on the maternal side. Infant illnesses that may increase the risk include: bacterial meningitis, viral encephalitis and severe untreated jaundice. Other factors include premature birth, low birth weight and multiple gestation.
