The commonest cause of hydronephrosis is kidney stones that block the urinary tract. Other causes can be pregnancy; blood clot in the ureter; tumors of or close to the ureter; narrowing of the ureter due to injury/infection, birth defect, radiation therapy or surgery; problems with the muscles or nerves in the ureter or bladder; spinal cord or nerve injury.
