You are at higher risk of an incompetent cervix if you have:a history of incompetent cervix with a previous pregnancy; had cervical surgery, injury, trauma(eg dilation and curettage); DES (diethylstilbestrol) exposure; anatomic abnormalities of the cervix. Other risk factors for cervical weakness include:cervical cautery(to remove growths or stop bleeding) and cone biopsy(removal of a cone-shaped section of tissue for study to detect precancerous growth). Before pregnancy or during the 1st trimester, there is usually no method to determine whether the cervix will eventually be incompetent.
