The main treatment for acute and subacute endocarditis is taking antibiotics for a long time to clear the infection from the blood and the heart. These drugs are first injected in the veins via a canula but in later stages of treatment may be changed to oral. Treatment of endocarditis mostly involves specific antibiotic therapy depending on the results of tests. Flucloxacillin and gentamicin are used for acute endocarditis while benzyl penicillin and gentamicin are preferred for subacute. Triple therapy with vancomycin, gentamicin and oral rifampicin is used in those with penicillin allergies, prosthetic valves and resistant strains of staph aureus.
