The single most important risk factor of developing endocarditis is damage to the heart valve e. g. rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease and other abnormalities. Others include poor oral hygiene, immunodeficiency, malignancy, diabetes mellitus, alcoholism and intravenous drug use. 50% of cases occur in those aged over 60. People at highest risk of endocarditis include those whose heart has been damaged by another heart disease, those who were born with defects of the heart and those who have undergone valve replacement and now have artificial valves. People who abuse intravenous drugs are also at higher risk.
