In pericarditis, the pericardium gets irritated and swells. The pericardium is a thin sac-like membrane that surrounds the heart, and normally contains a little fluid for lubrication as the heart beats. Pericarditis usually comes suddenly but also heals quickly, if the cause is recognised soon and treated.
