While a common cold may go away on its own some may complicate with added bacterial infection on the irritated airway, e. g. pneumonia, bronchitis (irritation of airways in the lungs). The airspaces around the nose (sinuses) can also get infected with bacteria. The inner parts of the ear can also get infected, especially in children, leading to a disease called otitis media.
