Surgery may be needed to repair badly damaged throat tissue or take out swollen tonsils due to the obstruction caused by acute obstructive pharyngitis. Recovery from surgery can take several weeks but most patients are able to heal completely without experiencing recurring problems. The surgical intervention is not for uncomplicated cases.
