The complications of hypertension are the long-term effects of continually high blood pressure on the body's organs. The chances of the complications and their severity depend on how high the blood pressure is. Complications include bleeding into the brain causing loss in brain function, enlargement of the heart and failure in its pumping activity, death of the cells of the heart, damage to the kidneys which in return worsens the condition and damage to the eyes that can ultimately cause blindness. Hypertension also affects blood vessels by causing thickening of their walls so forcing the heart to pump with even greater force to get blood to the body's organs.
