The most common cause of anaemia in pregnancy is iron deficiency anaemia, which is 85% of all cases. It's usually caused by diet problems or low iron stores resulting from previous heavy menstrual losses. Premature babies may also get anaemia due to inefficient bone marrow production of red blood cells. There are numerous causes of anemia and your doctor may do other blood tests to find the cause.
