If your doctor sees that your acute pericarditis is complicated, he will admit you to the hospital so that the fluid that surrounds your heart can be removed. This is done under local anaesthesia (medicine to prevent pain). If the acute pericarditis comes back, the sac around the heart may be removed in surgery called pericardiectomy.
