Someone who has suffered clots in the legs, or has been kept still for long, or broken a bone is at risk of pulmonary embolism. People who have had major surgery, or have cancer, or have inborn conditions that make their blood thicker than normal could also suffer pulmonary embolism. Some medications, eg birth control pills, increase the risk, so does being overweight and smoking.
