When the sac around the heart gets irritated, too much fluid can collect in it, affecting the way the heart fills with blood when pumping. This can lead to blood pressure dropping so low the patient could die. There is a risk of the acute pericarditis continuing for a long time and the heart losing its elasticity, so that it doesn't beat well.
