Surgery is rarely needed for a simple lung abscess. It is usually done for patients who have failed to respond to antibiotic treatment or who are suspected of having a lung cancer. The surgeon may insert a chest drain that will be kept in the chest and connected to a collecting jar to drain out the pus. If this fails, the surgeon may remove a lobe of your lung or the whole lung.
