Hypertension is a disease greatly influenced by lifestyle and best treated by weight loss and good dietary habits. The risks for getting hypertension are varied. The people at highest risk are the elderly, those with relatives who have suffered from hypertension, the obese and people without enough physical exercise. Diets rich in harmful fats and excessive intake of salt especially at the table also put you at risk. Other risk factors include: hormonal problems and intake of medications e. g. birth control pills and steroids used in treatment of other illnesses. Additional factors are structural abnormalities in blood vessels especially narrowing of the vessels, disease in organs of the body e. g. the kidney. Often no cause can be found.
