If you develop pre-term labour, your doctor may recommend bed rest in hospital and, possibly, treatment with drugs that can postpone labour. If she/he believes the babies are likely to be born before 34 weeks gestation, she/he'll most likely recommend treatment with drugs called corticosteroids. These drugs help speed foetal lung maturation and reduce the likelihood and severity of breathing and other problems in premature babies during the newborn period.
