Most cases of hemothorax occur as a result of injury to the chest. With destruction of tissues, blood accumulates in the chest. However this may also happen in patients with infections, eg tuberculosis, cancer or in patients who have undergone chest surgery. People with a problem of blood clotting may also develop a hemothorax.
