Acute bronchitis is caused most often by a virus that causes inflammation of the inner lining of the bronchi. The virus causing influenza and other viruses are involved. Bacteria can also cause bronchitis. Some chemical irritants e. g. tobacco smoke and 'burns' in the throat due to acidity can trigger acute bronchitis.
