Allergic contact dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin triggered by contact with a substance (the allergen). This causes an allergic response resulting in erythema (reddening and warmth of surrounding skin), edema (localized swelling of area) and vesiculation (small blister like lesions) of the skin. It may develop 4-12 hours after exposure to the allergen.
