If you need to take steroids for SLE, you will usually be given immunosuppressive medicines at the same time. These work by suppressing your immune system so it doesn't attack your body's tissues; they also prevent long-term complications of steroid use, e. g osteoporosis. You will need to have regular blood tests to monitor your liver and kidney functions.
