"There are known triggers for indigestion, e. g smoking, too much alcohol, stress and anxiety, medicines, e. g aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines-used to treat arthritis; certain foods, eggs coffee and chocolate, can relax the sphincter at the join between the oesophagus and stomach or cause direct irritation to the lining of the oesophagus. Some medical conditions can cause symptoms of indigestion and heartburn, e. g peptic ulcers-ulcers in your stomach or the first part of your duodenum (small bowel). They occur when the lining of your stomach or duodenum is damaged and becomes inflamed. Peptic ulcers are usually caused by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. These bacteria live in the mucous layer of your stomach. They don't always cause symptoms, but they can cause peptic ulcers in some people.".
